I downloaded some Chinese characters from a web site, then rearranged and abstracted them to emphasize the "text" as very non-representational visual components. I used Microsoft Paint for the final assembly process because it lends itself to a combination of crudeness and pseudo-sophistication.

I wanted a lot of contradictory elements in the work: clarity and ambiguity, familiarity and obscurity, organization and randomness, direction and chaos, purpose and uncertainty. The patterns of red might evoke bloodstains, but there are many other possibilities as well.
